“Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”  // 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

Why Engage It?

There are more blessings in our lives than we could ever imagine. Simply waking up, breathing, and having breakfast are all incredible gifts that we have not earned. But many of us have learned to pay more attention to the things we think we lack. We set our minds and hearts on the negative, which starts to shape our everyday life. If you want to become a more grateful person, the best way to cultivate that is to count your blessings each day. This practice is simple and easy, and it helps train our brains to be attentive to all the good around us and the multitude of unearned, brilliant gifts in our lives. This practice teaches us that God is good and provides in abundance and in creativity.

How to Practice It

Supplies: Pen, journal

Time: 5 minutes

Find a reliable time each day – before bed, when you wake up, during a break at work, or when you brush your teeth. The idea is to write down at least 10 things you consider a blessing that day. They can be things like Jesus, God’s love, the Bible, etc., and they can also be things like coffee, chocolate, daylilies, and plumbing. If you’re able to do this once a day for a week or a month, try to pay attention to how your perspective on God and the world around you might change.
